Ten Commandments: Scriptural Locations

In our study of the Ten Commandments, some of you may want to look up one or more of the commandments in your own Bible.  For those who do, the list below cites book, chapter, and verse for each commandment.  I haven’t included these scriptural references in the daily posts so as to keep the focus on the commandments themselves.  As you can see below, the post can look cluttered and intimidating with them included.

  • God is love. (1 John 4:8, 16)
    • You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. (Matt 22:34-40; Mark 12:28-34; Deut 6:4-5)
      • #1 – You shall have no other gods before Me. (Ex 20:3; Deut 5:7)
      • #2 – You shall not make for yourself an idol. (Ex 20:4; Deut 5:8)
      • #3 – You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. (Ex 20:7; Deut 5:11)
      • #4 – Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy. (Ex 20:8; Deut 5:12)
    • You shall love your neighbor as yourself;
      (Matt 22:34-40; Mark 12:28-34; Lev 19:18)
      that is, treat people the same way you want them to treat you.
      (Matt 7:12; Luke 6:31)

      • #5 – Honor your father and your mother. (Ex 20:12; Deut 5:16)
      • #6 – You shall not murder. (Ex 20:13; Deut 5:17)
      • #7 – You shall not commit adultery. (Ex 20:14; Deut 5:18)
      • #8 – You shall not steal. (Ex 20:15; Deut 5:19)
      • #9 – You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. (Ex 20:16; Deut 5:20)
      • #10 – You shall not covet. (Ex 20:17; Deut 5:21)
  • We love because He first loved us. (1 John 4:19-21)

Having provided the specific citations in this post, I’ll go back to leaving them off the daily posts starting tomorrow morning.  However, I’ll put a link at the bottom of each of the remaining posts, linking back to this one should you want to return to it later.
