All over America today, men are waking and preparing themselves to go forth into the world and make a name for themselves lest they be considered a “nobody.” Yet in the sight of God, a man who does great things in his career yet fails as a husband and father is nonetheless a failure. The man’s success in work in no way redeems, or makes up for, his failure as a husband and father in the eyes of God.
What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his family?
Many men who are considered great on earth will lose their reputations the instant they transition from this life to the next one. In that life, the men considered great will be the ones who laid down their lives for their wives and children while on earth.
From the Old Testament:
…you shall love your neighbor as yourself…
– Leviticus 19:18
The word “neighbor” means “near one,” and there is no one nearer to a man than his wife and children.
From the New Testament:
“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.”
– John 15:13
If a man does not befriend his wife and children, who can take his place?
Do not fret excessively, men, about your sins of the past. Let God forgive you. Yet live this day according to the truth that you now know. You cannot undo your past, but you can outdo it by the way you live today and all the remaining days you have on earth.
Greatness in the eyes of anyone but God is not a greatness that matters.
