Paul wrote of “the kindness and severity” of God.
Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God’s kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off.
– Romans 11:22
I have personally experienced both the kindness and severity of God – the kindness of God in His blessings, and the severity of God in His judgments. Indeed, His kindnesses are kind and His judgments can be severe.
I have also experienced the kindness and severity of my fellow man.
Comparing the two, I have to say that the kindnesses of God are more kind than the kindnesses of man, while the severity of God is less severe than the severity of man. For this reason, I, like David, if given the choice, would always choose judgment by God over judgment by men. His mercies endure forever; they, like His goodness, follow me all the days of my life.
The Lord is good to all,
And His mercies are over all His works.
– Psalm 145:9
