Who is like the LORD our God,
Who is enthroned on high,
Who humbles Himself to behold
The things that are in heaven and in the earth?
– Psalm 113:5-6
How exactly did the One who is “enthroned on high” go about “humbling Himself to behold the things that are in heaven and in the earth”? He went about it by becoming one of us – a human being. He became Jesus of Nazareth, son of a tradesman – devoting roughly three decades to the effort.
God did not descend to the earth to give us a quick glance. He devoted a lifetime to “beholding the things that are in the earth.”
Think of it! The God of all creation humbled Himself to become a man – a man who would do good to his neighbor…and be spat upon as his reward. And He knew this would be His earthly reward when He took on the mission. He had no illusions about how it would play out.
He who was the highest gave up His place of utmost honor to take the place of the lowest, the place of maximum dishonor – all for us.
We have yet to fully appreciate just how humble is our great, great God.
