For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.
– 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 [emphasis added]
As we wake up this morning, we renew our commitment to do for Him what we would have otherwise been doing for ourselves.
- We fulfill our marriage vows…not for our benefit, but rather for His.
- We pursue our vocations…not for the advancement of our interests, but for the advancement of His.
- We execute our daily tasks…not for the improvement of our reputations, but for the improvement of His.
Being a Christian in the Lord’s eyes means accepting a radical alteration of our most fundamental motivations in life. In other words, true Christianity is a “deep cleaning” of the selfishness that has been rooted in our lives from childhood. A “touch-up cleaning” is not sufficient. Selfishness is a deep stain, but the Lord’s grace is powerful enough to remove it. Repeat the application of that grace as necessary.
Examine your motivations each morning and throughout the day to be sure they are properly aligned to the will of Him who made you, redeemed you, and loves you.
