As Moses gives us the account of how God created the heavens and the earth and everything in them, he eventually gets to Adam and Eve and says this:
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
– Genesis 1:26-27 [Emphasis added]
God created nothing else “in Hs image.” Thus the Scripture indicates that human beings are utterly unique in all of creation. Nothing else – no other creature of any kind – bears God’s image.
What does it mean to be made in God’s image? Among other things, it means that we are moral; that is, we each have a conscience. This conscience is the means by which we discern good and evil.
The next time you think about the fact that we are made in God’s image, remember that this means we are to be moral in our thoughts, our words, and our deeds. To be immoral is to deface the image of God in oneself.
