In living for Jesus Christ, we learn obedience by the things we suffer. This is just the way He Himself learned obedience.
When He instructs us to turn the other cheek, it is getting our cheek slapped in the first place that gives us a chance to practice that commandment. If we did not suffer the slapped cheek, we wouldn’t have that command to obey.
Does this mean we go looking for suffering? God forbid. Besides, it will come to us without our seeking it anyway. Especially as we seek to live for Christ’s approval instead of the approval of others.
Jesus on the cross was the ultimate example of turning the other cheek. Can we honor Him if we demand justice every time our cheek gets slapped?
If we want to obey Jesus, we have to walk the way He walked. That means not returning evil for evil or insult for insult. Even in our thoughts.
Bible notes on this post.
The purpose of this blog is to proclaim Jesus Christ to those who want to hear about Him without having to join a church – or anything else – but Him.
