Are you a righteous person – or are you a sinner in need of repentance? I am a sinner in need of repentance.
If we ever consider ourselves as righteous people, it means we have lost sight of God. That is, we have been forgetting Him. We have been leaving Him out of consideration as we think throughout the course of the day.
If we remember God, if we keep Him in mind, then we could never consider ourselves righteous, for He alone is good and there is no one like Him. When it comes to sinfulness, we are much more similar to the worst person we know than we are to God.
We forget the hundreds of little ways that we cheat our employers and serve ourselves. We ignore the selfishness of our own desires and justify them as righteous. We look down our noses at others when they’re only committing the same sins that we do.
The good news for us as sinners is that Jesus says there is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over 99 righteous persons who need no repentance. My only question is: Where is God going to find in our generation 99 persons who need no repentance?
