Have you ever been in a room that has a one-way mirror? It looks like a mirror to you so you only see your own reflection. People on the other side, however, can see into the room with you in it. Even if you have never been in a room like this, you have probably seen one on television or in the movies. The people in the room conduct conversations knowing that they can be seen and heard from the other side of that one-way mirror. They know they don’t have privacy. They can, in that sense, “see” the “unseen” people on the other side of the glass. They know someone is there, though they usually don’t know who.
Therefore, this kind of “seeing” is actually “knowing.” That is, you know – you are aware – that you are being watched. Only in God’s case, He sees all the way into the depths of your heart. Another important difference is that because Jesus lived a life on earth recorded in the Bible, you can know a great deal about the person on the other side of the glass. It’s someone who loves you immeasurably.
This is one way you can build a constant consciousness of God into your life – living your life as if we were in a room like that, because we are. You go through your day knowing that He is watching everything you think, say, and do. This awareness, combined with your awareness of Jesus’ nature, allows you to live your life in a much better way than you could ever live it alone. If you’ve ever tried to prove yourself to another human being – whether it was your parents, your spouse, your children, people at work, or anyone else – apply that same effort toward pleasing the One “on the other side of the glass” and you’ll find power to do right that you never knew you had.
