The label “Christian” was originally a term a derision – a way of making fun of someone. The term “Jesus Freak” has similar connotation today. While the term “Christian” has long since achieved a degree of respectability, “Jesus Freak” is still pretty much always a put-down.
Like everyone else, I don’t like being “called names” by anyone. But if I had a choice, I’d rather be thought of as someone who goes overboard about Jesus than someone who has achieved some degree of religious respectability.
Jesus is a person. He is our God, our Creator. I love Him.
Christianity, by contrast, is a religion, or a doctrine, or a social category – all dry and sterile concepts.
I am not willing to lose all for sterile concepts. I owe all to Him who loves me and gave Himself for me.
If in my quest for repentance before Him, I am subject to a little name calling – what is that in comparison to what He suffered for me?
