The Holy Spirit Is Your Lifeline

Deep-sea diving is dangerous work.  For the diver’s security, a cable or rope is extended from the ship and kept attached to the diver.  No matter how deep or how far the diver moves away from the vessel, the lifeline maintains the connection between the two.

The earth is a dangerous place to live.  It’s an especially dangerous place for those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.  For this reason, the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus at the outset of His ministry.  The gospels make note that the Spirit descended as a dove.  I am not accustomed to seeing doves land on people so this must have been quite a sight.  One of the lessons we can draw from it is that the Holy Spirit comes most easily to those whose hearts are still.

Some people think that if they get themselves all upset and then go to God, that God will calm them down.  The reality is that God honors faith and humility.  He rewards those who believe that He is, and who believe that He generous to those who approach Him.  Therefore, a quiet heart obtains infinitely more from the hand of God than the agitated heart.  The Scripture says that those who doubt God should not expect that they will receive anything.

Jesus, of course, exhibited all the attitudes and behavior necessary to benefit from the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit.  Through every circumstance, high and low, Jesus stayed tied to His Father through the Holy Spirit.  Though He was the Son of God, though He was without sin, yet He did not attempt to represent God without the lifeline of the Holy Spirit.

When someone dies, they leave an inheritance.  When Jesus died, He left an inheritance.  It wasn’t land, or goods, or cash, because He didn’t have any of that when He died.  The inheritance He left in the earth was the Holy Spirit – and you who believe in Him are His heirs.

The Holy Spirit is the first portion of the inheritance you receive from Jesus, and the guarantee that you shall receive the rest.  This guarantee is a result of the Spirit being your lifeline to God.  Through Him, you always stay connected.  Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor demons, nor things present, nor things to come, nor any created thing shall be able to separate you from Him with whom the Holy Spirit constantly connects you.

If you’re in deep water, if you’re in a hard place, if you’re in a dry place – no matter how difficult the circumstance in which you find yourself, the Holy Spirit is there with you to bring the thoughts of God to your soul.  Experience His fellowship.  Calm your heart so you can hear Him.  Still your anxieties so you can know His thoughts.  Trust that Jesus has given you His Holy Spirit for just such moments as this.  Then you will know, deep in your soul, that He has remained true to His promise to never leave you nor forsake you.

The Lifeline is real.  Don’t be deceived into thinking He is not.  Now…or ever.
